In my never-ending quest to bring you, my faithful Jazzville, NJ readers, all I can about the NJ jazz scene, I’ve come across a very interesting jazz band, mixing equal parts Sun-Ra, Ornette Coleman and Voodoo Glow Skulls. The NJ quartet bills itself as Mothguts and has launched a Kickstarter project seeking funding to cover recording & touring costs.

Though their promotional video is kind of dark, I thought the sax player looked familiar – and about 3/4 of the way through, my suspicion was confirmed as a cute child-like voice announced, “Anthony Ware, sax.” Anthony has been around the NJ jazz scene for some time, playing with names such as Donald Malloy, Shirazette Tinnin, and our favorite, Radam Schwartz.

If you decide to support the group financially, rewards start at the $5 level in the form of an MP3 copy of their latest album when they finish recording it. They go up from there and include CDs, T-shirts, even a live performance at your house. A very generous $1,000 contribution will get you a day-long improv intensive with the band, culminating in a concert later than evening where you will perform together with the group.

You can find out more about the project by checking out Mothguts’ Kickstarter project. Be sure to watch the video and check the right hand column for a full list of contribution rewards. Or just check out some of their past work on this sample page.
