We’ve previously covered the Jazz Lobsters Big Band here on Jazzville, NJ. But unless you’re really in the know, you may not have heard of the Jazz Geese. Don’t be too hard on yourself though. After all, these performers aren’t even aware of their own musical talent.

If you plan on being in the big city (NYC that is) this Friday, head out to La Lanterna’s Bar Next Door to hear saxophonist, EWI player and drummer Adam Niewood play live.

Son of the late Gerry Niewood, this jazz improviser and composer is carrying on his father’s musical traditions without skipping a beat. Earlier in June he performed some of his dad’s never-before-heard compositions at Trumpets, found after the elder Niewood’s death in a plane crash last year.

Six days and counting – so much to say, so little time. Where to start?

Kickstarter.com is a website that allows people to post causes and take donations from others who support the same. It’s breathed life into tons of worthy projects that would have never seen the light of day otherwise.

Recently a cause came to my attention that will be of interest to Jazzville, NJ readers. But there are only six days to go before the time allotted for funding runs out.

Last week it came to my attention that father and son jazz drummers, Cecil Brooks II and Cecil Brooks III, would be performing a set together. Although they played on back-to-back nights, circumstances did not allow me to attend either evening.

Zan Stewart has been a jazz journalist – or as he prefers to call it, “jazz advocate” – for the past 35 years. He announced earlier this month that he’s finally putting down his pen and paper and will be retiring.
