Trumpeter Dominic Farinacci signs CDs for eager fans after his performance at William Paterson University's "Jazz Week" on July 22, 2010

Dominick Farinacci signs CDs after his Jazz Week performance, July 22, 2010.

“As a musician, you grow by surrounding yourself with people who are better than you,” said trumpeter Dominick Farinacci to the audience attending Thursday night’s performance of William Paterson University’s Summer Jazz Week.

“But that’s not the case here,” he laughed as he looked at his bandmates, sending everyone into an uproar.

When most people think of a globe-trotting jazz musician, 25-year-old Farinacci probably wouldn’t come to mind. From the humble way he walks onstage, to his friendly and humorous interactions with the audience, you’d quickly underestimate him.

Until he starts playing the trumpet that is. Once you hear the notes, it’s easy to understand how this young musician rose to fame overseas, releasing six albums and winning various awards at such a young age.

Last Thursday’s concert featured music from his most recent release, “Lovers, Tales, and Dances,” a CD of songs written by composers from around the world. His first piece “Libertango” definitely set the tone for this cross-cultural journey, pulsing with seduction and powerful Latin rhythms.

There were plenty of upbeat numbers like “It’s Alright With Me,” but it was his newly-written and still unreleased ballad, “Time Changes Everything” that stole the show. It was absolutely touching to watch Dan Kaufman tenderly play the piano as our hearts melted with each romantic trumpet interlude.

Another major highlight of the night was a blues number that filled the room with funk and soul. Bassist Yasushi Nakamura’s plucking brought a down and dirty feel to the set, while drummer Carmen Intorre’s percussions had the crowd swaying and clapping in time.

Farinacci and the band then brought the house down with a hip rendition of the classic “Moanin” which was exactly what we all inwardly did when the show came to a close because we wanted to hear more!
